5 Quilt Patterns for Beginners

Whether you decided to take up quilting as a hobby for the new year, inherited a quilting machine from a family member, or have simply had an interest in quilting and want to know where to start, you're in the right place. There are so many factors to quilting, both with a machine or without, and starting your journey with the right patterns is essential to success.

There are some quilt patterns that require a better understanding of certain functions or techniques, but these 5 quilting patterns are great for beginners. You can always work up to the more advanced quilts, but if you're looking for a place to start, search for patterns like these!

1. Triangle Quilt

Using simple triangle fabric cuts makes your life much easier and lets you focus on the larger picture rather than having to fuss over accurate cuts and precise measurements. This Minimal Triangles Quilt Pattern from Simple Simon & Company is quick to put together and very big, which makes for a great way to ease into bigger quilts!

2. Jelly Roll Quilt

For a quilt full of cute patterns and endless ways to design, jelly roll quilts are a neat segue into using different types of pre-cut fabric outside of fat quarters. If you want to learn more about popular pre-cut fabric types, check out our blog, "Fat Quarters and Other Pre-Cut Fabric Sizes." However, if you want to learn how to make your own jelly roll quilt, you can find one called the Jelly Roll Strip Quilt Pattern at Sew Kate Sew!

3. Chevron Quilt (The Easy Way…)

Speaking of different pre-cut fabric sizes, the Chevron Quilt pattern from Jamie Sanders at Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom makes a quilt with a layer cake fabric cut and half-square triangles. It's quick, easy, and you can choose from the two sizes that the pattern offers: twin or lap-sized. Since your fabric design will be your choice, this quilt pattern is perfect for any season, mood, or event you might need it for.

4. Basket Weave Quilt

Another pattern from Jamie Sanders at Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom that might only take you ONE DAY is the simple Basket Weave Quilt Top! This is another beginners' pattern that is fast and easy, which is good for beginners to build their basic skills and confidence. There aren't many seams and points to line up, and with just a few pre-cut 10"x10" stacker bundles (layer cakes), your quilt top will be perfect and ready for use!

5. Big Square Block Quilt

Talk about scrappy - if you already have hand-me-down or leftover fabric but no pattern for it, this Squared Quilt Pattern from Suzy Quilts includes only straight cuts and seams, so you can get your needle to the fabric without too much research beforehand! You can use yardage fabric, scraps, or pre-cut fat quarter bundles - whatever floats your boat!
